kinship & identity

spaces for Black youth to thrive

nurturing Black futures

At the heart of KinCultivate’s mission is the belief that Black youth deserve spaces where they feel affirmed, connected, and empowered. Kinship & Identity programs are designed especially for youth of African descent, creating opportunities for them to learn, grow, and build lasting relationships.

Through mentorship, cultural exploration, and hands-on experiences, these programs help Black youth develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. Some young people grow up deeply connected to Black culture, while others have had fewer opportunities to engage with it. Kinship & Identity programs ensure that every Black youth, no matter their background, has access to experiences that strengthen their sense of self and equip them with the tools to navigate the world with confidence.

Why These Spaces Matter

Black youth in Oregon often find themselves in environments where their history and culture are not reflected around them. This can create a sense of isolation or uncertainty about where they fit. Studies show that when Black youth have spaces where their identity is affirmed, they develop stronger self-awareness, emotional resilience, and a greater ability to succeed academically and socially.

Without these spaces, many struggle to find the support and connection they need. But when they are surrounded by people who understand them and experiences that validate who they are, they develop a deep sense of self-worth and the agency to shape their own futures.

Kinship & Identity programs provide that foundation—offering a space where Black youth are encouraged, celebrated, and prepared for whatever comes next.
