KinCultivate at the 2025 African American Youth Leadership Conference
KinCultivate’s Executive Director, Ty Anderson-Hubler, will be presenting a youth workshop at the 2025 African American Youth Leadership Conference (AAYLC). This annual event brings together middle and high school students from across the region to celebrate Black excellence, leadership, and identity.
Ty’s workshop is designed specifically for middle school students and invites them into a powerful and affirming space to reflect on identity, belonging, and what it means to be part of a larger community. This interactive session is part of KinCultivate’s ongoing commitment to supporting youth of African descent in embracing who they are and showing up for one another.
The 2025 AAYLC will take place on Saturday, March 8 at Oregon State University’s CH2M HILL Alumni Center. The event is hosted by the African American Youth Leadership Coalition (AAYLC).

Roots & Recipes: Exploring Cuisine and Farming of the African Diaspora
Roots & Recipes: Exploring Farming and Cuisine of the African Diaspora is an exciting one-day camp designed for teens from diverse backgrounds, taking place on Saturday, April 26th at Linn Benton Community College. This unique program offers students entering 7th through 12th grade an opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich traditions of farming and cooking, with a special focus on the African diaspora.
Throughout the day, participants will dive into the world of sustainable farming with David Barron, owner and farmer at Cross-Eyed Cricket Farms, and board member of The Benton Soil and Water Conservation District. Teens will roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty in the garden, learning about soil, water, and cultural food staples that have nourished communities for generations.
In the kitchen, Olajumoke Elkanah from Flourish African Mart will guide them through the process of creating a traditional Nigerian dish, offering a taste of the rich culinary heritage that has shaped the African diaspora. This camp goes beyond simply teaching new skills—it’s about honoring the contributions of Black farmers and chefs, and inspiring the next generation to carry these vital practices forward.

Time: Drop-off at 9:45 AM, Pick-up at 3:00 PM
Location: Linn Benton Community College (Albany Campus)
Who: 7th - 12th graders from all backgrounds
Cost: Free
Lunch: Provided. Students will also get to enjoy the dishes they prepare during the cooking session.
What to Expect:
Hands-On Learning: Teens will participate in interactive sessions that cover both farming and cooking, gaining insights into traditional practices and modern techniques.
Culinary Creation: Each participant will have the chance to cook a dish under the guidance of a professional chef, and they’ll get to enjoy their culinary creations in addition to a provided lunch.
Cultural Exploration: The day will also include discussions about the significance of Black farmers and chefs, exploring their role in preserving cultural heritage and promoting diversity in these fields.
This camp is open to teens of all backgrounds, and we encourage anyone with an interest in farming, gardening, or cooking to join us for a day of learning, creativity, and cultural exploration.

Corvallis High School Black History Field Trip
KinCultivate is collaborating with Corvallis School District to bring a cultural learning experience to high school students across the district. This trip takes students to Portland’s Historic Albina District to explore Black history in Oregon through guided storytelling, neighborhood tours, and conversations about culture, displacement, and resilience. Open to students of all backgrounds, the experience offers a deeper look at the communities that have helped shape the city, and the state.
Students and guardians should check with their school for permission slips, schedules, and additional details.
This opportunity is made possible with support from the Oregon Department of Education’s African American/Black Student Success Grant.

Corvallis Middle School Black History Field Trip
In collaboration with the Corvallis School District, KinCultivate is offering a cultural field trip to Eugene for middle school students across the district. The experience invites students of all backgrounds to learn about Black history in Oregon through place-based learning and guided reflection on identity and community.

Brilliant Cousins Pop-Up: Boys Group

Brilliant Cousins Field Trip: Juneteenth Rodeo
KinCultivate is heading to Portland for the 8 Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo! As part of The Brilliant Cousins, this field trip offers middle school youth of African descent a chance to celebrate the legacy of Black cowboys, experience the energy of the rodeo, and connect with community.

"Untold Stories of Albany: Contributions and Challenges in Black History" Presented by Oregon Black Pioneers Hosted by KinCultivate in partnership with Albany Public Library
Join Oregon Black Pioneers and KinCultivate for a groundbreaking presentation highlighting Albany, Oregon’s Black history. Crafted specifically for Albany, this program will explore untold stories of Black pioneers, business owners, and community leaders, shedding light on their contributions and resilience.
Led by Oregon Black Pioneers' Mariah Rocker, this presentation will also include an interactive trivia session with prizes and opportunities to connect with local organizations. Light brunch will be served (until gone!) at 10:30 AM with the presentation starting at 11:00 AM.

Nature with Chrisha - Connecting with Ancestral History and The Land
Join us for a unique and immersive outdoor experience at Marys Peak, led by our long-time collaborator, environmental educator Chrisha Favors. This guided hike will explore the native plants of the Pacific Northwest, engage in moments of reflection, and connect with the ancestral practices of Black and Indigenous communities. It’s a meaningful opportunity to engage with nature, deepen your understanding of the land, and honor those who have come before us.
This two-hour hike will take you through the beautiful trails of Marys Peak, the highest point in Oregon’s Coast Range, offering breathtaking views and diverse ecosystems. Black History Walking Tour of Albany, Oregon
Join us for the Black History Walking Tour of Albany, Oregon, hosted by KinCultivate in partnership with our Portland-based cousins, Oregon Black Pioneers! This tour will guide you through the untold stories of Albany’s Black pioneers, businesses, and community leaders who helped shape the city’s history. Together with Oregon’s only statewide African American historical society, we’re proud to bring these often-overlooked stories to light and celebrate the resilience and contributions of Albany’s Black community.
As the first of its kind in our city, this two-hour, 2-mile tour will start and end at Monteith Riverpark, taking you through key historical landmarks. Whether you’re a local or visiting, this is a unique opportunity to connect with the rich history of Black Oregonians. Proceeds from the tour will directly support KinCultivate’s programs, empowering Black youth in the Willamette Valley. Spots are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot early!

Join us in celebrating Pura Belpré, a Harlem Renaissance trailblazer and the first Afro-Latina librarian in New York City. As a puppeteer, storyteller, folklorist, and author, she inspired a love of reading in young audiences. This program will honor Pura with storytelling, art and crafts, and a book giveaway for kids!
